The Cable is Gone

Well, it will be gone next week. I called today and someone will be out to pick up our cable box on Tuesday. I'm hoping for at least 3 months of no TV but we'll see.

Catherine and I have been talking about this for quite some time. She's not quite as enthusiastic as I am but is definitely willing to give it a shot. Harry wasn't really consulted. He'll watch TV but he's not especially attached to it.

I should note that no TV does not mean no TV. I suspect the Gamecube and XBox will remain quite active and that the DVD player and VCR will still be in use without any limits imposed. It's simply that we've all noticed that we tend towards passive TV viewing and we're curious about what would happen without any channels to watch.

We got rid of cable about an year and half ago. I miss some channels as do the boys and dh misses sports but other things have filled it place. Can't say we've never looked back but the monthly savings has us thinking twice before re hooking it up.

We never had cable for the past two years in our Dartmouth big house, well, it was there (never unhooked by the cable company after the last owners). We considered it gone, it was basic cable anyway and sucked. For a very brief period we hooked it up to a little t.v. downstairs and Hope numbed herself with Teletoon all the time so we made it go away again. What crap that crap is. OMG. A couple t.v. shows from there and I'd be living with a sassy snotty Teletoonized preteen. No thanks. Now that we're in NB I have no plans of getting cable ever again. Hubby and I download House through his Blackberry, that's it for t.v. We don't even have real internet in the apartment at the moment, every once in a while I can get a good enough signal from one of the other tenants to get on and check mail, download bank info, etc. I found even the internet fluff kiddy sites were getting to be too much fluff too. So now they're adjusting to that...

I don't really have a beef with the quality of the TV shows. Heck, I'm a Top Model addict (and I just realized I won't be able to watch Canada's Top Model...ARGGH!!). I'm of the mind that even the crappy stuff can be good (as Sandra pointed out in my Dr. Phil rant) as long as the watcher is engaged. But we aren't these days. We're just vegging and then complaining that we aren't doing anything neat with each other.

We'll probably go back in the fall but who knows, maybe we'll enjoy this too much. Meantime, the money we save goes toward a big LCD TV and a Wii.

No need to miss Top Model, it would be posted to Isohunt or TVtorrents the same night it was on t.v. Just download and watch after the kiddies go to bed. Our t.v. at the moment is a 14" LCD monitor with a computer on it used as a PVR and everything works out fine. Even without the PVR part, you could just run the downloads and watch them on the laptop, same thing.

We just watched Monday's episode of House tonight, downloaded off isohunt. You just need to get used to figuring out which episode is what by the coding on it. There are episode guides found via google, e.g. Monday's House MD was season 4 episode 16 or something like that, so I found the S04E16HouseMD.avi (or something like that) with the most seeders on isohunt and downloaded it in about 30 minutes. Gotta love the interweb.

We've never had cable, and haven't developed much interest in tv. I can feel my eyes glaze over when my friends start discussing their tv and cable shows they all watch. Probably the same way my kids do when I start rambling on about history :-)
